Visit the 250 room Biltmore house and its gardens and winery all located on the 8,000 acre estate. Be sure and visit the shops and restaurants for unique items. George Vanderbilt created Biltmore as a vacation home. Vanderbilt had a "house warming party" for friends and family on Christmas Eve in 1895. He used this home and gardens as a retreat where he could feed his passion for art, literature, and horticulture. Building this massive estate was one of the most spectacular residential projects of its time (and still is!). The estate took over 6 years to build. To avoid construction delays, the estate had its own brick factory, woodworking shop, and railway spur for transporting materials to the location.
